I have heard from dozens of people who have been lead down a primrose path paying thousands of dollars per month for Pay Per Click campaigns who are completely convinced that they are doing SEO (Search Engine Optimization). There is nothing further from the truth than believing that you are paying for search engine marketing or optimization when you are only paying for Pay Per Click advertising. Search engine optimization is fixing your pages to make them as efficient as possible for the search engines, Google mostly, to catalog your Web pages the way that is most pertinent to your keyphrases. When people search for things in Google, if the phrase is pertinent to your product, site or offerings, you should FIRST make sure you come up in the natural search. If you cannot accomplish that after optimizing your site with the appropriate keyphrases then maybe your SEO experts are not what they claim.

It is perfectly legitimate to include pay per click in your Web marketing strategy, BUT it is NOT an alternative to proper search engine optimization. If you are being told that your site is search optimized go to Google and search for it. Get the Google toolbar and watch to see if you have pages with a low, or NO, pagerank. This is a telltale sign that you are conducting pay per click, but NOT search engine marketing. Do you have pages with NO pagerank? This is an indication that you do not even have the MOST BASIC premise of SEO for your site. FIRE your SEO company and start over locating a better qualified firm.
